Career Networking and Your Business Card Diving in further - Hallie Crawford
Career Networking and Your Business Card Diving in further I got some positive feedback on my recent posts where I dove deeper into specific topics that I write about in my Career Articles online. (Thanks Dina for your response). So Im going to do more of that this weekI hope its helpful. Business Card Tips and Etiquette How important is your business card? Are you in the kind of business where you use it a lot, or not at all? I used to work in a field that didnt require much use of the business card. So I subsequently used mine as bookmarks, to write to do lists on, and now to be honest, I have a large box of old unused business cards in my office that I just cant bring myself to throw away. I like to recycle as you know and hate wasting paper. Now that Im in business for myself, I realize just how important these little cards are, especially if youre in the job market or in business for yourself. So how important are they? Theyre important, and heres why: 1 They make a statement about who you are. Because I can control the way my card looks, the look is very important to me. Its my image and my 1st impression. If youre in business for yourself, or looking for a new job, make sure your card makes a statement about who you are. 2 Think about your personality what kind of card fits your personality? Create one that fits who you are. 3 Consider the job youre searching for what kind of card is most appropriate for that field? More conservative and straightforward or creative and funky. My cards walk the line between creative, bold, hip and professional. I always get comments on them, it makes me that much more memorable to the person Ive just met. So make yours that way. Make a statement, the right statement. 4 If youre in between jobs, should you make up a card? Yes, especially if youre attending a networking event. You need something to hand to people right? You can easily get cards made for free online these days, or something done at Kinkos. It doesnt have to cost a lot to look good. So make something up with your contact info and the type of job youre looking for. Include the title of your current or previous position on there so people can identify you with a specific field. If youve got a sense of humor include something funny and memorable. Making a good first impression is important in career networking and your card is an important part of that impression. Good luck! Paying For Graduate School - The Best Ways To Fund Your Degree
Paying For Graduate School - The Best Ways To Fund Your Degree Paying For Graduate School---What's The Best Way To Fund Your Degree? Going to graduate school is an exciting, yet costly, endeavor. But, like it or not, many of the best jobs today require some sort of advanced degree. In this article weâll discuss the best loans, grants, and other alternatives to pay for your continuing education. Cost-Benefit Analysis Before you consider going to graduate school, youâll need to decide if an advanced degree will be worth the hundreds of thousands of dollars you might be spending to get it. Graduate school isnât the same as undergrad when it comes to financingyou wonât be reliant on your parentsâ income to fill out financial forms. So how do you do a cost-benefit analysis (CBA)? First youâll want to understand how much your degree will cost. In general (it varies from school to school) a medical degree costs around $200,000 at a private institution and $128,000 at a public university, a law degree costs around $45,000 per year based on a study of the top 20 schools, and an MBA, on average for a top school, costs $150,000. As you can see, grad school costs a LOT. If you dont get a high paying job after an additional four years of school, youll be in debt for a very long time. Luckily, these three degrees tend to lead to very high paying jobs. Although some people will disagree with that when it comes to lawyers and business men/women. To get a specific idea for your school: add up all your degree costs (including tuition), transportation, family expenses, food, course materials, rent, health insurance, certification costs, loan interest repayments, and any other recurring payments. Then subtract the money youâll get from grants, fellowships, work study, etc. And finally, take this number and compare it to your potential future earnings. This will give you an idea of how much debt youâll be in and how long itâll take you to pay it off. Obviously, some professions require a degree (think doctor or lawyer), so the only control youâll have over cost is by the school you decide to attend. Related: Is Graduate School Worth The Cost? Start with Federal, State, and University aid If you thought the FAFSA was only for your undergraduate education, think again. Filling out the FAFSA should be your first step in attaining aid for graduate school. Luckily (or not so lucky depending on how you look at it), youâre most likely considered an independent student (unless you go to grad school right out of undergrad). This means you wonât have to go to the trouble of filling out your parentsâ financial informationâ¦just your own. When you fill out the FAFSA, youll be eligible for a few types of loans: Unsubsidized Stafford Loans and Grad PLUS Loans are the most common. With a Stafford loan, you can borrow $20,500 per year of Stafford loans with an aggregate limit of $138,500, which includes any Stafford loans that you borrowed as an undergraduate. These loans have a fixed interest rate set by the federal government. Grad PLUS loans are a little different than Stafford loans. Theres no real limit to how much you can borrowjust up to the cost of your schools attendance. With that being said, youll need a good credit score to qualify. After you fill out the FAFSA, you can go to StudentLoan.gov to apply for the PLUS loan. In addition, youâll want to check into funding through the state and university youll be attending graduate school in. Your schools financial aid page should lead you to all the information you need, plus each school will have a financial aid counselor, just like at your undergrad university. Look into private loans Although federal loans are frequently easier to come by, private loans come with lower interest rates. But you should be aware that youll likely have to start repaying private loans while youre still in school. Sofi and Earnest are two of our picks for private student loans. They offer private loan options for those with decent credit. Both offer fixed or variable rates that can help you pay off your loans quicker. You can also refinance past loans at a lower interest rate and pay off your loans from your undergraduate education sooner. Related: How To Apply For Private Student Loans How to compare loans If you want to compare your potential loan rates quickly, in a single place, youll want to look at Credible or LendingTree. You can look at rates for new loans or if youre looking to refinance. Youll enter your basic information and your schools info and youll see your rates all in one place. Related: Read Our Credible Review. Plus, Money Under 30 readers who refinance their student loans with Credible can get a $100 bonus! Grants can offer your free money Grants are, to some extent, free money towards your graduate education. But you should never count on these. Theyre highly competitive, especially if you enter a popular field such as law or medicine. Heres a short list of some grants by the most popular graduate fields. You should also check grants.gov, which can help you find even more grants. There are also grants based on degree type and minority status. Petersons is a scholarship finding site helps you find any grants you qualify for (both for undergraduate and graduate school. Other ways to pay for grad school Loans are always an option for graduate school, but if you can get money you dont have to pay back at a high interest rate, thats always the option youll want to takewhether thats through work study, your employers, or even credit unions. Employers The most ideal graduate school situation is finding an employer who will pay for some or all of your degree. Chances are youll need to work for a bigger, corporate company to get this benefit, but there are employers out there who are willing to pay, especially if it benefits them. Or, at the very least, theyll work with refinancing companies to get you an even lower rate if you choose to refinance. Credit unions With lower (or no) fees, a community feel, and better service, more and more people are turning to credit unions for their banking needsincluding their student loans. If youve exhausted all your other options and need a private student loan, credit unions can offer those with high credit scores and good grads a good deal. Student Choice, and CU Student Loans work with a number of credit unions to offer you the best interest rate on your student loans. Work for your school Every college will offer some work-study program for those with intense financial need. If youre working towards a masters in teaching, you can student teach, if youre looking to get a medical degree you can work in a lab, if youre looking to become a lawyer you can work for a law firm while in school, etc. Most of these programs allow you to get paid directly, or you can pay it straight towards your tuition. Check with your colleges financial aid page for more information. Consider an online degree There are certain advanced degrees where it might make sense to consider enrolling in an online institution. Its cheaper, more flexible, and youll still get the knowledge you need. What online degrees cut out most is living costswhich make up more of your college experience than you probably realize. Dorm life is extremely expensive. You can also usually cut the cost per-course nearly in half when you take online vs. in-person classes. But be warned, online degrees still cost a decent amount of money. Luckily, most employers dont question or care if you got your degree online. When you consider how many students enrolled in traditional universities, also take a handful of online courses, there isnt always a huge difference educationally between the two types of educations. Summary Funding graduate school isnt a fun endeavor, but there are many ways to do it. Filling out the FAFSA is your first step and will help you figure out what kind of federal aid you qualify for. If that doesnt cover your expenses, you can turn to private loans and grants. Read more How To Pay For Grad School The Smart Way 6 Ways To Financially Prepare For Grad School

Keywords Will They Make Sure You Get The Job - Work It Daily
Keywords â" Will They Make Sure You Get The Job - Work It Daily Make Sure You Get The Job How many times have you been told not to use the same old cliché sayings in your CV? How many times have you heard that employers are tired of reading repetitive, regurgitated CVâs and want unique and original copy? Too many times to count I imagine⦠Well, ignore everything youâve been told - things have changed! Once again, computers have stepped in and the process has changed. Itâs now much more monotonous, thousands of CVâs are scanned at once, and thereâs no time to waste being creative and eye catching here. Itâs time to follow the herd and make sure your CV makes the cut. There is an art to keyword cramming in your CV and James Baker of Vivid Resourcing is here to show you how. So how does it work? You e-mail across your CV, itâs placed on to a database with thousands of others and a computer program is used to pick out the CVâs with specific keywords, and these are the CVâs that are passed to HR. Make Sure You Get The Job Here are some tips to help your CV make the cut. 1. Copy Their Advert Itâs more than likely the keywords the company is looking for are the very ones that they have included in their advert for the position. Donât copy the advert word-for-word on to your CV, as at some point your CV will be read by human eyes. But if you can make a list of keywords theyâve used (if they apply to you) and figure out how to squeeze them in to your CV, this will help you pass the first stage screen test. 2. Visit Their Website Their website is going to be jam-packed full of keywords that they associate with the company, such as their values. If your CV has keywords and their values match up theyâre going to want you on their team. 3. Seek Out Other Industry âAdsâ Take a look online for similar jobs advertised within the same industry. Youâre going to see the same keywords crop up time and time again. These are the words you want to be including in your CV. Itâs best to review a large selection of adverts and to note down as many keywords as possible. The more you can match up with the employersâ computer program, the better your chances. 4. Read Up On Industry News Gather as many trade journals as you can find, paperback or online, and read up on whatâs going on in your industry. The more informed you are the more likely that you will have just the keywords theyâre looking for. If there are new developments or industry trends that you spot, gather keywords around this, these are the kind of keywords that will get your CV to the top of the pile. 5. Include Power Keywords This is something, historically, weâve always included within our CVâs, however, after a backlash from various recruitment advice posts, was told this was a 'no no.' This is because candidates were promised that, if they used certain words, they would get the job. Then, suddenly the same key phrases were included in thousands of CVâs, resulting in a very laborious task for the HR department. This new way of including keywords requires a little more attention to detail. Do your homework, and include leadership and teamwork keywords that apply to your industry. This way youâre not just reeling off the bog-standard catchphrases of the past, but are being industry specific, and tailoring to your job role. 6. Search For Industry Professionals On LinkedIn LinkedIn is an excellent tool for establishing the keywords for your CV because itâs full of industry professionals. Their profiles will provide clues as to what your potential employers are looking for. Take a look at a handful of industry leadersâ profiles, and take note of any important words that crop up in each of their pages. Ideally, you want a summary at the beginning of your CV with your skill set, which includes the keywords you have established using the above points. This gives the computer system and ultimately the interviewer easy access to the keywords. You then want to repeat the keywords throughout the CV, just in case they arenât picked up initially. Remember though, your CV will be read by human eyes eventually and you want it to make sense and read well. Photo Credit: Shutterstock Have you joined our career growth club?Join Us Today!
