Study finds that yoga helps reduce workplace stressStudy finds that yoga helps reduce workplace stressA recent study conducted by CareerCast saw 78% of employed respondents ranking their stress as a seven or higher on a 10-point scale. A separate study conducted byDynamic Signal reports that roughly 60% of employers are ready to leave their firms because of the anxiety they cause them. From open offices to the inclusion of plant life, to playing video games on company time, Americans are desperately looking to unconventional ways to keep their cool at work. Enter a study that recently appeared in the Journal of Occupational Medicine.Researchers analyzed data derived from 13 different trails, involving about 1,300 participants, and revealed workplace yoga to be a potential method of reducing workplace stress.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreCheap and effectiveYoga at work could be one of the chosen programs to reduce stress levels, and usually requires low investment, with minimal equipment, explainsLaura Maria Puerto Valencia, researcher of the Bavarian Health and Food and Safety Authority in Munich, Germany, and the new studys lead author.Although the inclusion of yoga in the workplace yielded no discernible benefits to heart health, researchers did musiknote significant boosts to mental well being. The researchers behind the study additionally highlighted the need for more experiments to determine whether or not the reduced stress levels were a direct result of the yoga specifically. The firms that were willing to participate in the studies previously mentioned were already considering ways of accommodating the mental health needs of their employees, as well as enhancing job satisfaction and productivity. Those sort of stipulations implies a workplace that is generally less tense than most.Even still, no negative results were reported, so that the authors we re able to conclude, with some confidence, that the take-home message should be yoga is a good practice in the workplace as a means of reducing stress.Independent studies have championed yoga for better breathing, reducing anxiety and depression, and even promoting healthy eating habits. So even if your company does not provide classes for staff, utilizing yoga techniques might be worth looking into, whether during the morning before your workday begins or in-between projects in the comforts of your cubicle. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from jngste im bunde Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Pharma Dips Into Organs on Chips
Pharma Dips Into Organs on ics Pharma Dips Into Organs on Chips Pharma Dips into Organs on ChipsI have in my bag a kidney and a brain. The plenary presentation by National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Francis Collins at a recent biotechnology conference may have started on a macabre note, but no living creatures were harmed in its making. Rather, Collins carried in his bag two thumb-drive-sized plastic chips that could put hordes of mice and other laboratory animals out of work. His talk marked the coming-of-age of organ-on-a-chip technology a new 3D twist on the classic Petri-dish-based method of studying human cells and a more accurate alternative to animal tests. Organs or tissues on chips can recreate complex biological functions of both healthy and diseased human cells, giving scientists a new view of their mechanical properties, biochemical microenvironment, and 3D molecular structure. If they continue on their current trajectory, organs on chips could fundamentally alte r how life scientists study human physiology, disease processes, and new drug candidates. The drug industry and federal health research agencies are investing in the technology as a promising way out of todays expensive, slow, and failure-prone drug.Whats in a ChipThe first organs on chips developed using microengineering technologies for cell biology applications came from researchers at Harvards Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering. Their organs on chips are microfluidic systems embedded using advanced microfabrication technologies into a translucent polymer chip. Hollow microfluidic channels are lined with living human cells grown in culture to reflect the make-up of an organ or tissue of interest. New microchip technologies have enabled engineers to construct structures that recapitulate the complex interactions between multiple tissue types in an organ system for example, it is now possible in a lung-on-a-chip device to measure the dynamic biochemical, biophysi cal and biomechanical relationships between lung tissue and the blood vessels feeding into it. Such processes enable not only diagnosis but prediction of a disease process over time. The Wyss Institute team is currently working to build and link 10 human organs on chips to reproduce whole-body physiology the first human on a chip system.Judges give design award to Lung on a Chip. Image Wyss Institute at Harvard UniversityThe chip is not only functional but beautifully designed. At least according to judges at this years entwurf of the Year competition at Londons Design Museum. Wysss organs on chips took first prize the first medical device so honored as a fantastic example of a minute object that takes design away from simply being aesthetically pleasing to having a global impact on the way we will live in the future. A collection of chips will be on display at New Yorks Museum of Modern Art until January 2016.Chipping Away at Drug Development BottlenecksOrgan-on-a-chip pioneer a nd Wyss Founding Director Donald Ingber views the technology as a sorely needed fix to a drug development process that is broken. As he told reporters, Everyone knows it. The drug companies know it. The FDA knows it. But no ones done anything about it.It currently costs millions of dollars to test any compound for therapeutic potential. From synthesis to approval, the develop process typically drags out over 10 years. For every drug that makes it through the pipeline to FDA approval, as many as nine others fizzle out along the way because they failed in human clinical trials. Factoring in the cost of those duds, the pretax costs of developing each new approved drug shoots up to an average of $2.6 billion average development cost of each new approved drug, according to the Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development.Although Big Pharmas massive ramp up in research spending since the 1990s has cooled, the industry still hochhackiger schuh billions into the drug development pipeline every year. Paradoxically, the annual number of new FDA-approved drugs has plummeted in direct proportion to the increase in RD spending. Any technology with reasonable potential to close the gap is bound to get noticed. If organ-on-chip technologies prove capable of accelerating the pace of drug testing, producing more reliable data, and reducing the financial and ethical drawbacks of preclinical research, everyone could win.Organs on a chip could speed drug development. Image Wyss Institute at Harvard UniversityAnimal AlternativesDrug companies, regulators, and animal rights activists have plenty to disagree about when it comes to drug research. But their respective agendas appear to align when it comes to organs on a chip. Diverse often adversarial stakeholders ranging from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to the FDA to the NIH are investing in organ-on-a-chip research at laboratories across the nation. For example, The National Center for Advancing Trans lational Sciences, part of the NIH, launched its Tissue on a Chip program in 2012 to create tissue-on-chip models for drug toxicity testing that combine an organ of interest with a liver model on the same device allowing scientists to measure a drugs therapeutic effect on the target organ and its toxicity in the liver. For decades, scientists and drug companies have relied on animals from mice to monkeys to help them test the safety and effectiveness of new compounds. The Humane Society of the United States reports an estimated 25 million vertebrate animals are used in research, testing and education in the U.S. each year. More activist animal rights groups such as PETA put that number closer to 100 million. Many, if not most, of these animals either perish during an experiment or are euthanized after. Research on non-human primates mankinds closest physiological relatives is especially contentious. Although primate labs are closely regulated and monitored by the U.S. Department o f Agriculture, the seven existing centers in the nation are favorite targets for PETA scrutiny occasionally with impact. In 2013, Harvard University rocked the drug development establishing by closing its influential primate research center under a cloud of controversy over its animal care practices. Emboldened activists have since mounted protests disrupting the construction of new animal research facilities under way at the University of Washington. The search for alternative methods is fueled both by these animal welfare issues and by bioengineering advances. One intriguing alternative 3D bioprinting is now used to create highly detailed facsimiles of malignant tumor cells and the diverse constituents in their immediate orbit. These duplicates of the so-called tumor microenvironment create the possibility of printing an exact copy of a living patients tumor and measuring its response to various treatment combinations all while the patient waits. Pioneering companies like Organ ovo (San Diego, CA) are developing 3D bioprinting for the research niche as they pursue the technologys even-brighter future in large-scale anatomical recreation. Another animal-free paradigm, in silico simulation, applies high-end computational chemistry algorithms and 3D computer graphics for all-virtual drug discovery and screening. None of these techniques is mature enough to supplant animal models, but rapid advances and lower equipment costs are enticing researchers to try them out.The animal testing paradigm is still entrenched in the drug development process and will be for some time. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) still requires exhaustive preclinical animal testing of drug candidates before they enter human trials. And for an agency often characterized as slow to embrace new technologies, FDAs strong support for chip-based alternatives has been a welcome departure.Michael MacRae is an independent writer.Learn about the latest trends in bioengineering at ASMEs Global Congress onNanoEngineering for Medicine and Biology. Always Keep Some Running Away Money on Hand
Always Keep Some Running Away Money on Hand Always Keep Some Running Away Money on Hand I recently had the privilege of interviewing the incredibly impressive Margaret Heffernan for my podcast. Over the course ofher career, Heffernan has run five companies in the US and the UK, taught at the college level, written five books, and given multiple TED Talks. In fact, Heffernanscareer is so impressive that it welches hard to narrow my questions for her into a list that would fit in one podcast episode. As you can imagine, the interview was wonderful. The insights Heffernan shared havent left my mind since we spoke.Heffernan describes herself as someonewho has always done work that shes loved. At times, she was paid well at others, she made very little. No matter what, she was always happy in her work.I asked her how shehad been able to organize her career this way. She made two important points.First, when a job wasnt the right fit,Heffernan didnt hesitate to walk away - even if she ha d only been there for a short period of time. As employees, we tend to stick around for a while out of some sense of artificial loyalty - but employers wont hesitate to fire an employee who isnt working out. Why stay in a job that isnt working out for you?WhenHeffernan found herself in a dissatisfying role or company, she looked for another job that would be a better fit. This must have been a tough decision at times, but I think we can all agree it is easier to succeed in an environment that trulysupports us.Heffernans second tip was gold - almost literally. She said she always kept enough running away money on hand.I cant tell you how happy this phrase makes me Perhaps you know it by its more common name an emergency fund. Such funds are typically enough to get you through 6-12 months of living expenses.Having a financial safety net like Heffernans running away money gives you choices. It allows you to walk away if you really need to. You wont be stuck with an employerthat doesn t support you simply because you need the money.Just having the running away money doesnt mean you actually need to run away. In fact, it can give you the very confidence boost you need to really thrive at work. You know youll be okay, even if everything else falls apart. That added confidence alone may be enough to make work bearable after all.A version of this article originally appeared onCopeland Coaching.Angela Copeland is a career coach and CEO at her firm,Copeland Coaching.

How to Be Liked By Everybody at Work - The Muse
How to Be Liked By Everybody at Work - The MuseHow to Be Liked By Everybody at WorkYou want to be well-liked by absolutely everybody in your office (who doesnt, right?). Sure, those donuts you bring in for your team every Monday morning are definitely a step in the right direction. But, when it comes to being admired and respected, theres a little mora to it than those frosted pastries.Whats even more important? Being an inclusive and empathetic team member. Embodying those qualities will leid only mean youre well-liked, but also respected. So, how do you go about it? Here are a few tips to set you in the right direction. 1. Resist the CliquesMuch like in a high school cafeteria, cliques can quickly form at work. You find the people who you get along well with, and then you tend to spend the majority of your time socializing with only them. That might be comfortable, but its hardly inclusive. So, challenge yourself to venture outside of your usual group and interact with some new peopl e.Sit with a different table at lunch or strike up a conversation at happy hour with someone youve never met before. The more you can put yourself out there, the better 2. Pay Attention to Your LanguageYou know that being inclusive means being all-encompassing. But, youd likely be surprised at how often your word choices can betray your intentions.Did you departure an email with a seemingly casual hey guys? Perhaps a more neutral hey team wouldve been better. Did you provide well wishes for a holiday you just assumed your co-worker celebrates? Did you make a comment or remark that you meant to be humorous- but could be easily misconstrued by someone with a different cultural upbringing?Listen, as long as you were well-meaning, most people wont take offense from a minor slip-up. But, if you really want to roll up your sleeves and be more inclusive of all of the people you work with, keeping a watchful eye on your words is a great place to start. 3. Be the New Employee Welcome WagonYo u likely know firsthand how intimidating it can be to start a new job. You need to get up to speed on the entire company- while feeling like you dont have a single ally or confidante in your corner. Why not step up and be that trusted friend for people who are just getting started? Take a new team member out for lunch or for an after-work drink during his first week. If you see someone looking lost in the hallway? Help get him to where he needs to go.Being warm and welcoming to new employees is not only just the nice thing to do, its also a great benefit to you too- youre widening your web of contacts and friends in the office 4. Think Outside of YourselfWhile youre gathered around the coffee pot in the morning, one of your colleagues laments to you that shes feeling totally stuck in Excel. Considering that youre hardly a spreadsheet whiz yourself, you commiserate with her and then go about your day. But, being inclusive extends far beyond just what you can do for someone else- it hel ps to bring some other people into the fold as well. So, if you know for a fact that Dave in accounting is a tried and true Excel master, offer to connect the two of them so that he can help her with her problem. Doing so is a surefire way to not only be more inclusive yourself, but to encourage that atmosphere across your entire office. 5. Ask QuestionsPeople sometimes assume that being empathetic and open-minded means blindly accepting things without a second thought. But, in reality, that couldnt be further from the truth.Inclusiveness is about understanding and accepting all different types of people. And, asking questions about various beliefs, traditions, or opinions is a great way to engage in a thoughtful conversation while learning more about the people who differ from you. So, talk to that team member about that cause she regularly volunteers for or ask that colleague about that religious tradition hes currently honoring. Theres nothing more inclusive than putting in the e ffort to get to know people on a deeper level. When it comes to being well-liked in the office, bringing in the occasional treat is a great place to start However, being likable goes much deeper.Employees who are inclusive, empathetic, and friendly are the ones who are always most admired and respected by their team members. So, put behauptung tips to work, and youre sure to have stronger bonds with all of your co-workers.

The dirtiest place in an airport is nearly impossible to avoidThe dirtiest place in an airport is nearly impossible to avoidAttention travelers As many of us head home on flights for the holidays, we know to prepare for the inconvenience of long lines. There are an estimated 2.55 mio passengers traveling per day on U.S. airlines this Thanksgiving holiday. What we may not realize is the number of germs that also await us at the airport.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreA study published in 2018 found that the dirtiest part of an airport is not in the bathroom like you may expect, but in an unavoidable part of the airport we must all pass through - security check.Security check bins are the dirtiest part of an airportTraveling may bring us closer together to ourloved ones, but it also brings us closer in contact with infectious diseases.A study in BMC Infectious Diseases recently fo und the highest concentration of viruses in the plastic bins you put your clothes and technology onto in security check. To test this, researchers collected air and surface samples at Finland airport Helsinki-Vantaa during flu season. They checked the samples for influenza, as well as other viruses like respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus, rhinovirus, and coronaviruses. While escalator handrails, check-in touch screens, and toilet seats were cleared from having any of the viruses, the hand-carried luggage boxes at the security check area tested positive for the viruses half of the time, posing the biggest risk.Of the surfaces tested, plastic security screening trays appeared to pose the highest potential risk, and handling these is almost inevitable for all embarking passengers, the study warned.Security trays may be the filthiest part of an airport because of all the ways that our bodies touch them, increasing the risk of spreading diseases. The germiest parts of the airport are t he same as the germiest parts of the rest of the world - anything people touch, infectious disease specialist Paul Pottinger said in a video warning travelers. The Critical Skill You Didnt Know You Need to Succeed
The Critical Skill You Didnt Know You Need to SucceedThe Critical Skill You Didnt Know You Need to SucceedYouve heard it before To succeed in todays business world, companies have to be innovative. Youve probably also heard that the leaders of those companies have to be innovative, too. But, unless youre sitting in the C-suite or working for a notoriously innovative company like Apple or Google, you probably underestimate how important this quality is for yur individual success.Think again. The ability to innovate- to apply creativity to conceive something new or solve a customer need- is a skill that every single one of us should cultivate in urselves. Read on to learn just a few of the ways that being innovative is critical to your success, and small ways to develop it along the way (no matter what you do). Being Innovative Will Make You mora HirableLike leadership, collaboration, or ownership, having a reputation for being innovative is one of the soft skills that employers are in creasingly vetting potential employees (like you) for. Why? More and mora companies are realizing that one of the biggest keys to organizational neuerung is the people they hire- at all levels. Larger companies like Marriott International or Comcast need innovative people to help them stay competitive in the changing market startups like HomeAway or Venmo need innovative people to help them grow big ideas, fast. Innovation brings creativity and business value together, so if you are in a role where you are solving business problems editors note thats arguably almost any role, then innovation skills are critical. As the world gets more competitive, the leaders who are able to lead teams to think outside the box and create compelling and industry-leading solutions will win in the marketplace, shares Jennifer Hsieh, the VP of Insight, Strategy, and Innovation at Marriott International. Being Innovative Will Help You Keep Your JobOne of the secrets of people who are really successful at fast-growing companies is how rapidly theyre able to adapt to the chaos and uncertainty of adding new people. They become adept at redefining their jobs on a regular basis. This is the advice that Molly Graham, COO of Quip and a past employee on growing teams at Google and Facebook, shared in First Round Review. In other words, its not just about being able to innovate at your job- its about being able to innovate what your job is rolling with the punches as organizations change and constantly finding new ways you can provide value. Even at more established companies that arent growing at a breakneck pace, this is a valuable asset. As Mark Lukens shares, by snagging up thats not my job tasks and turning them into your job, you can quickly become indispensible to a company and poise yourself to lead up the next big thing. And companies are not quick to let go people like that.Being Innovative Will Help You Grow Into a LeaderAs we said above, innovation isnt just a skill for leaders. But it is a skill that turns people into leaders. Over time, many people who are successful in the corporate world got there because theyve mastered analytical, operational, and executional skills As you build confidence with innovation, it changes the way you approach and solve problems, think outside the box, and lead teams, says Hsieh.Kick Start Your Innovation With a Job at Marriott InternationalHow to Get It- and Show ItSo, how do you start becoming more inventive in your day-to-day work, and then show the skill off to your current and future employer? As Warby Parker founder Neil Blumenthal explains, innovation is a muscle- one that we all have and one that can be strengthened over time. Entrepreneur and innovation expert Annabel Acton shares four easy ways you can start thinking more creatively at work, no matter what you do, here, and this article describes how the most successful people of our time make innovation part of their everyday routines. Beyond that, regularly look for ways to get out of your comfort zone at work. Is there something that needs to be done within your organization that nobody else seems to be willing to own? A project outside of your department that youre curious about and can ask to help with? An idea you can bring to the table and offer to lead the charge on? Take some risks, follow a few crazy opportunities, and stay open to doing things a little differently. Doing so from time to time will help keep you brain primed for more innovation. Finally, when youre applying to jobs at companies that you feel value this attribute, focus on ways to show that you are of the innovative ilk. Talk about a time you took initiative and brought a new idea to the table (no matter how small) or invented something new. Talk about a time you failed, showing that youre not afraid to take calculated risks to move the business forward. Talk about the online class you took or your varied hobbies to show that you have curiosity and a passion for learni ng. 8 Ways to Get Over Mommy Guilt
8 Ways to Get Over Mommy Guilt 8 Ways to Get Over Mommy Guilt Mommy guilt is real. You will experience it from time to time regardless if youre a new at working motherhood or not. About four in ten working moms said they dont spend enough time with their children. Where 18% of part-time working moms and 11% stay-at-home moms said the same according to a Pew Research Center survey. The good news is that with practice mommy guilt can stop paralyzing you. Use one of these eight tips to release mommy guilt and get on with your life! Decide If Youre Done Something Wrong Your guilt could be brought on because you made a bad choice. Did your child need you but you had an important business call first thing, so instead of giving them a five-minute hug you rushed them out the door? Then, yeah, youre guilty of putting work before your kid, but its your call if what you did was wrong. What was your top priority in that moment? Was the business call that important or could you have cuddled for a few minutes? To help release the mommy guilt think of the airplane emergency oxygen mask. We all make our kids the priority but there will be times when you need to put yourself or your career first. And thats OK. Create an Anti-Mommy Guilt Credo Heres a quick way to release mommy guilt because you had to leave your child to go to work. Try to create an anti-mommy guilt credo based on why you work. Start brainstorming by answering these questions: What motivates you to get out of bed and head to the office every day? What are your big work accomplishments and why should the world know about them? What are your professional values? Why did you choose to become a working mom? Next, take the answers to these questions and make a statement, or credo, that you can tell yourself when mommy guilt bubbles up. This credo will give you the willpower to move past the guilt and reassure you that youre making the right choice. If you suffer from writing block perhaps theres a warning sign that you missed. Go back to the first tip for help. Get Some Space From People Who Cause You Guilt Did someone say something that made you feel mommy guilt? Set a personal boundary that says youll keep your distance from that person or you wont bring up whatever subject matter that caused you guilt. Relatives can be trickier. If your mother-in-law makes a snide comment about you working, find an excuse to leave the room. This better than stabbing a fork through her hand.? Consider the Other Persons Perspective When you come face-to-face with an anti-working mom comment, try to remember they speak from their own perspective which is based on their experiences. Ask yourself Where is their comment coming from? What has happened in their life that would cause them to believe they are right? You have to see the comment in light of the choices they have made for their family. Did the woman who made this comment put her career on hold to be home with kids? Did she miss working or hate being dependent on her husband for money? Then perhaps she has to believe her perspective is right so she can live with the tradeoffs she accepted. Take a Personal Day and Spend Time With Your Child For gnawing mommy guilt, give yourself a break and take a day off to spend with your child. Youll reconnect with your kids daily rhythms, appetite, and personality. Here are some suggestions to make your day special. If your child is little, you can indulge in activities that dont fit elsewhere in the week like giving them longer baths and examining their little body for any rashes or checking out where their fine motor skills are at. If your child is bigger, let them choose the agenda, whether its the mall, a bike ride, or lunch and a movie with you. During your downtime take some time to reflect on your life as a working mom (did you create your anti-mommy guilt credo yet?). Take out your journal and start writing, mama! If you cant take a vacation day, pick your child up early for a few hours of play. Or, declare one weekend day errand-free and spend it just being a mom. If your schedule is really tight, the next time you have to stay home with a sick kid, try to treat it as bonding time, instead of a television and Jell-o marathon. Remind Yourself That We All Have Our Challenges When youre feeling a work-family conflict, its easy to idealize the life you would have as a stay-at-home mom. You imagine dancing through fields of dandelions with your children, scrapbooking every precious milestone and building their IQ to a genius level through activities recommended by early childhood development PhDs. The reality is that stay-at-home parents can have as much stress as working parents, if not more, depending on the age, temperament, and the number of kids.So go ahead and relish your solo commute to work or that quiet cup of coffee at your desk. If you were at home full-time, you might be lucky to shower in private. Admit That You May Miss Out on Things Its a simple fact of physics that a working mom isnt going to witness every single minute of her childrens day. Its okay to be sad about missing out on the sweet moments and the fun. If you let yourself mourn the things youre giving up by working, it may be easier for you to enjoy the things youre gaining. Its no use pretending there arent any tradeoffs. To help you overcome this type of mommy guilt ask your daycare provider if theyd use an app to keep you connected during the day. Itll help you to get through those guilty moments if you can see a picture or video of your kid enjoying themselves at school.? Know That This Wont Last Forever Life changes quickly. The choices youve made about work may seem like they will last forever but they wont. Your children will change! They may stop the tearful goodbyes and instead run off without giving you a second thought. Youll stop feeling forgetful because youll start getting a full night sleep in a few years. So eventually you can remember the many promises you make to your children. When you feel stuck remind yourself that things wont last forever. Before you know it your child will be in elementary school, making friends he or she may keep forever. You may get a different type of job with flexible hours so you can be home more. Who knows what will happen tomorrow! Stay hopeful that things will change and hopefully for the better. Edited by Elizabeth McGrory.

You Worked Hard to Recruit 2018 GradsNow Get Them to Stick Around
You Worked Hard to Recruit 2018 Gradsâ"Now Get Them to Stick Around You Worked Hard to Recruit 2018 Grads- Now Get Them to Stick Around You Worked Hard to Recruit 2018 Grads- Now Get Them to Stick Around Rossheim Millennial workers, born between 1981 and 1996, have quickly become the largest generation in todays workplace. And from the get go, theyve been known for their independent thinking and propensity to jump from job to job. In fact, nearly half of surveyed Millennials in this 2018 Deloitte study said they expect to leave their current employer within two years. Its no surprise then that their younger counterparts, Generation Z workers (born between 1997 and 2012) are even more mobile-minded. In the same survey, 61 percent of Gen Z said they would leave for greener pastures within the same period. Gen Zs penchant for thinking in terms of gigs rather than jobs isnt surprisingafter all, theyve grown up in a gig economy. That means youll likely be facing a major employee retention challenge with these young workers. Its a conundrum that some employers have already experienced firsthandone that you may have experienced yourself. Retaining young employees who are new to the job market is extremely challenging, says Chris Wunder, senior director of recruitment at Leap Hospitality. So how can you get these gig-minded Gen Z workers to stick around a bit longer? If youre targeting younger workers, do your research, says Caitlin Bidwell, vice president of operations at Davies Public Affairs. Know what is and isnt important to them, and what your competitors are doing. Get to know them by talking with themand oftenand not just about the task of the moment. In other words, engage them, and then demonstrate that you heard their concerns. The following insights from small business owners will help keep your youngest workers busy, engaged and in place. Give them the big picture from day one. Many post-Millennial workers know they want to make a mark in business, but they dont know how. So the key to retaining Gen Zers is to convince them from day one that, as long as theyre with you, youll help them make something of themselves. Let each Gen Z new hire know what they will get to do in their first week, month and year. And then plant a longer-term 5-year vision about their possible career trajectory at your company. Also, make sure that your young hires know that your leadership is accessible. Im the owner, and I sit out on the floor with everybody, says Deborah Sweeney, CEO of MyCorporation. New employees recognize that everyone is talking to everyoneincluding managementall the time. Even if your recent Gen Z grads dont have in mind a clear career trajectory, theyre always be thinking about what comes next. You need to talk to them, figure what their plan is, says David Lord, CEO of educational game maker JumpStart. Work with these hires on their goals, or help them revise those goals to mesh with reality. They expect leadership to be accessible, and achievable; if you want to keep them, show them how to lead. Create opportunities to gig in diverse functional areas. Adopt the Gen Zs gig mindset by exposing them to several functional areas of your business. That will give them a sense of the possibilities your company offers. It will also help you see what they do best. Put this plan into action early on by giving them self-contained projects with a well-defined beginning, middle and end. Keep in mind that Gen Z is even more gig-minded than their Millennial elders. Gen Zers want to go out and create something; theyre entrepreneurs, says Chad Sorenson, president of Adaptive HR Solutionsand Treasurer of HR Florida State Council. The question for employers is, how can we keep them engaged, yet independent? Rotating through different areas of your business should be meaningful, even if its limited in scope. Be sure to keep it real; Gen Zers will smell make-work a mile away. We came up with an accounting project for someone in sales when they earned a business degree and wanted to try out accounting, says Sweeney. Mentoring can work well for Gen Z. Gen Z workers are willing to accept counsel as long as their more experienced colleagues are willing to listen to them. Develop a mentoring program that pairs your new hires with someone in a similar role with more seniority. This helps entry-level professionals feel both grounded and upwardly mobile. Lord says that Gen Zers come in much more balanced than Millennials. They have a holistic view of the world; theyre not self-absorbed. This can help your Gen Z workersget more out of their mentor relationships. Make feedback a two-way street. Tell your youngest new hires how they are doingand do it frequently and on a regular basis. Gen Z needs affirmation. They need to know that theyre doing the right thing, says Sorenson. But before you do that, ask them how they are doing, and ask if theyre encountering any obstacles (whether with policies, procedures or people) in your organization. This generation expects a dialog that continuously relates their tasks at hand to the achievement of their career goals. Do all you can to show your young workers that youre sincerely seeking out ways to make your organization work better for employees. You can ask, for example: Are there things that prevent you from doing your job as well as you could? Use digital media to show Gen Z the value of their benefits. Teach Gen Zers the value of their employee benefits. Dont assume they understand even the fundamentals of insurance, for example. This youngest, most mobile of generations expects this information in an easily digestible form, whether its brief videos or terse text. Leave the details to the fine print. But dont stop there. Explain perks face-to-face to make sure they understand the value that theyre receiving and how it accumulates over their tenure. Demonstrate, for example, how 401(k) accounts, especially those with a match that grows over time, become much more valuable with longer tenure at your organization. Show Gen Z how they will grow with your company. Demonstrate that every new employee is directly invested in the growth of the company, in terms of both compensation and professional development. Draw direct lines between company growth and personal and professional growth. Make this point in multiple forums and media, from videos to periodic company meetings to one-on-ones. As Gen Z joins the front lines of companies like yours, theyre ready to soak up as much experience as possible. Take advantage of their zeal to learn. After all, these young workers will contribute to the vitality of your workforce and the future of your business, so remember to approach them with care.

5 Marketing Lessons Applied to Online Recruiting
5 Marketing Lessons Applied to Online Recruiting 5 Marketing Lessons Applied to Online Recruiting Whether youâre in the recruiting professional or simply in the market for a few good employees for your vacant positions, you know the impact that low unemployment numbers are having on the overall talent pool. Qualified applicants are fewer and further between and when you do manage to find that Goldilocks âoh, just rightâ kind of prospect, it ends up feeling like youâre the one trying to make a good impression to woo them in the door. If youâve been getting the distinct feeling that your search for new candidates has more in common with a sales pitch than an interview process, youâre not that far from the truth. In todayâs day and age its more important than ever that employers make and keep a great impression and who better to take a few lessons from than the world that focuses on the sell? Here are 5 marketing lessons that can and should be applied to online recruiting. Define Who You Are Targeting If youâre a denture adhesive company its pretty clear that your target audience isnât going to be 16-year-old girls. Your mission is to attract a clientele that is a bitolderand uses far less âlike yeahâsâ in their Instagram selfie posts. The same can be said for an effective recruiting campaign. Start with a job description of required experiences, anticipated tasks, and any needed certifications and qualifications. Use this information to make a profile of a quality candidate. Once youâve identified the type of person youâre looking for itâll make it that much easier to peruse various industry-specific job boards or networking sites targeted by your demographic. Know Your Target Audience Now that youâve got a roadmap to a successful new hire, itâs time to identify when and where than individual utilizes the internet. If youâre looking for recent grads for an entry level opening, websites that cater to c-suite executives probably arenât going to be your thing. Along similar lines, those in need of artistic or creative positions probably arenât going to have as much luck on white-collar focused platforms such as LinkedIn or Bloomberg. In addition to going out and finding the individual candidates, savvy employers need to ensure that their job listings are doing the best job of bringing talent to them. Want to read more? Understand their motivations, the language they use, and speak to them in that same language. Simply Hired, recently delved into the keyword debate in our âLessons from the Word Cloudâ study. Use those takeaways and help ensure you have a job listing that accurately reflects the open position and the type of candidate youâre in the market for. Craft a Clear, Compelling, and Consistent Message When youâre developing a brand, itâs vital to success that your consumers know they can come back time and again for the same consistent, quality product or service. The same logic can be applied to candidates during the interview process. As a recruiter or hiring manager, be sure that your pitch for the company or specific job listing remains consistent throughout the process. Stress the key values and perks of accepting a specific position in order to maintain a candidateâs interest. Finally, be sure to follow up the talk with specific actions during all stages of the interview process. Keeping a unified âbrand messageâ in place will ensure quality candidates find value in your company. Put Your Message in Front of Your Target Audience Multiple Times Youâve probably heard some version of the age-old marketing axiom that it takes the average person 7-13 times to hear a slogan, commercial, or catchphrase and associate it with a given brand. The same type of repetition of a message can be applied to the recruitment process as well. Consistent follow up with candidates and outreach with specific prospects is one of the best ways to not only ensure a smooth hiring process but also ensure that a candidate feels appreciated for their skills and experiences they bring to the table. Whatever form your recruitment plan takes, identify an ideal frequency or number of interactions per candidacy and build your points of contact (interviews, follow up, hiring applications) around that magic number. Track, Measure, and Optimize The last, but not least, lesson to be learned by recruiters from the world of marketing involves tracking your progress both on a micro and macro level. If youâve recently changed, developed, or implemented a plan of attack for attracting quality candidates itâs important to keep stats to confirm your approach isnât working. This is an equally important task when it comes to evaluating a current approach to the hiring process. Key data points to analyze recruitment effectiveness may include stats such as average length of time from application to hire, the number of candidates who withdraw from the hiring process and, once hired, the average length of time your candidates remain on the job. If you see a less than desirable outcome on these figures, itâs probably an indicator that something isnât working and changes are in order. Start over with #1 on our marketing vs recruiting list and wash, rinse and repeat your way to desired results. The Marketing Bottom Line Itâs clear to see that the marketing and recruiting worlds have much in common. Each field is dedicated to âsellingâ their value proposition to a target audience. Sure, you may want your new hire to be excited about designing shoes, rather than buying them, but the concepts are still universal. Take a page out of marketingâs well researched and developed textbook and follow our guidelines above in order to get a heads up on the competition for quality to add to your brand story.

Help Me Hire a Minion
Help Me Hire a Minion Help Me Hire a Minion Help Me Hire a Minion While I am busy writing these articles, I really could use a little help around the house, so I decided that maybe itâs high time to hire a minion. I placed an ad in the âMinion Dailyâ: Help Wanted: Minion needed to do light housework, help with homework, and walk the dog. Must be punctual, wear blue overalls, and be good with dogs and kids. Caution: our dog really likes to chew apart stuffed toys. All of the minions I have seen appear equally adorable and immature to me, so help me pick one of the three responses I have received. Minion A Have done housekeeping I like petting little dogs I got good grades in minion school I own lots of overalls Minion B I have been in two blockbuster movies called Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2, in which I played a minion. If you donât know what a minion is, we are yellow, cylindrical beings with either one or two eyes. We may look the same, but if you look closely you will be able to see differences between our eyes, hair, height, weight, and clothes. We speak Minionese, which is a combination of many languages including French, English, Italian, Russian, Korean. We also make up our own phrases, such as âbee do bee do bee doâ and âbacko backo.â We do understand English. We find anything to do with buttocks extremely funny, especially if one of us can make copies of our bottom on a photocopier machine. We have an uncontrollable craving for fruit, especially bananas and apples (âbapplesâ). In the movies, I play with kids and am shown vacuuming, though I think the vacuum was off, and the sound effects made it sound like it was on. Minion C HOUSEKEEPER: In the past four years, I have cleaned houses for five different families according to very strict standards. I am highly skilled at: vacuuming, mopping, dusting, cleaning bathrooms, dishwashing, laundry (including folding), and washing windows with the help of a ladder. HOMEWORK HELPER: For all the five families, I also helped with kids from grades 1 through 8 with homework in all subjects. I am able to help the kids be focused and finish their homework on time with positive reinforcement and rewards, but I am careful not to do the homework for the kids. DOG WALKER: Two of the families I have worked with have dogs, including one large German shepherd. I was nervous at first with the dogs, so I took a certification course in dog handling and have no trouble since with not only walking dogs, but also helping to train dogs. TIMELINESS: In the four years I have worked, I have been late only once, and that is because an ice cream truck abducted me. APPROPRIATE ATTIRE: I own 3 pairs of blue overalls, and I wear one of them every day. The Different Formats What did you think? Was it pretty clear which format best highlighted the applicantâs skills and abilities? Each of these minions used a different format commonly seen in federal resumes these days. Letâs take a look at each one in further detail. BULLETED RESUME Very popular Easiest to write People think I am easy to read. But most of the time I donât have enough information or I donât hit the necessary keywords. THE BIG BLOCK RESUME I am the big block resume, and you can probably tell how I got my name. People used to use me a lot when the Resumix system was still in place, and even though Resumix has been retired, many people still use me. Resumix was a system where resumes were first evaluated by a computer for keywords. Now, however, all resumes submitted through USAJOBS are actually read by a human being first, not a computer. The reason the big block resume shouldnât be used is obvious. People hate reading a big block. That is because it is missing a very important design element called white space. White space is how your eyes know what to read and how the information on the page is organized. If you donât have any white space on your paper, then the eyes have no idea where to go, and reading the big block is really hard work that takes an incredible amount of additional concentration, especially right about now when you are in the middle of the block. Most people will completely lose interest in rea ding what you so carefully wrote, no matter how interesting or helpful the content might be. Moreover, most people using me as their format are simply taking all of the duties listed their position description and letting the lines all run together into this big block, creating something that is not only difficult to read, but also incredibly boring. You would not believe how long some of the blocks people submit are. We have seen many that are well over a page. Do your HR specialist and your application and huge favor and pick ANY format other than me. OUTLINE FORMAT RESUME STAND OUT: The Outline Format was developed by Kathryn Troutman in 1995 and has been accepted and highly praised by Human Resources specialist as the easiest to read. KEYWORD HEADERS: Keywords are the orange traffic cones of your resume. The HR specialist scanning the resume can immediately jump to the keywords they are looking for to find your experience with a particular knowledge, skill, or ability from the announcement. ALL CAPS HEADERS: This is another tool we use to make the keywords stand out even more. We donât have the option to use underline and bold in the USAJOBS resume builder, so we are limited to using all caps. But doesnât it work really well? PLENTY OF DETAILS: Your paragraphs should make a great case on how much experience you have with the topic keyword. Donât just list boring duties that no one else can understand. Write for someone who does not know your line of business, and provide plenty of supporting details. ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Telling one or two significant accomplishments that you have had at the end of a job block really helps the HR specialist to visualize your level of success at your job. We like to present these accomplishments as stories to make them come alive, using our CCAR format. You can add them into your outline format paragraphs or set them apart with bullets at the end of the job block. As a federal resume writer, I have literally taken resumes that looked like Minion Aâs and transformed them into ones that look like Minion Câs. Itâs possible- and necessary- if you want to get hired. The common sense tip for your federal resume is: turn your bulleted or big block resume into an outline format federal resume! ________________________________________ Paulina Chen has a passion for taking the complex and making it simple for people to understand. The Best Ways to Prepare for a Last-Minute Job Interview
The Best Ways to Prepare for a Last-Minute Job Interview The Best Ways to Prepare for a Last-Minute Job Interview In an attempt to make your job search as succinct as possible (i.e., get it over with fast and get hired), you blasted out a barrage of job applications to every potential organization that you thought you could be a fit for. And your hard work paid off, since you suddenly got a last-minute job interview. Thing is, you donât have a ton of time to do your due diligence on the company. If you have a last-minute job interview, here are some of the best ways to prepin under an hour: 1. Find out who youâre interviewing with. Thereâs something to be said for not sounding rehearsed during a job interview- but you still need to know who youâre going to be interviewing with. (Try to find out ahead of time if youâll be meeting with more than one person.) Then hit up LinkedIn and read up on their profiles to find out more about the person beyond their job title. You may discover that you share the same alma mater or that you both have a passion for, say, bocce ball. 2. Brush up on current events. Itâs not enough to know that the company was founded five years ago. You need to know whatâs currently happening with the business- and more importantly, where itâs headed. So peruse the companyâs website and read up on any press releases issued by the organization as a way to debrief yourself on the companyâs current standing. It will impress an employer to know that youâre aware that the company is the leader in its industry because of its stellar marketing campaigns, and so on. 3. Understand the companyâs mission. Today, employers arenât looking so much to fill a job position as they are to hire someone that they can invest in- and who is also invested in their company. Read up on the companyâs About Us page to discover more about what the company truly believes in, why it operates the way it does, and how it pays it forward with its humanitarian efforts. And ideally, its mission should resonate with you, too, to ensure this is a company that you truly want to work for, because that will come across in the job interview. 4. Learn about the culture. Sure, you know that the company youâre interviewing with believes in workplace flexibility, but what else do you know? Beyond flexible schedules, maybe the office environment is one that favors jeans and tees (and stays away from three-piece suits), and also believes strongly in open spaces and not cubicles or offices. Look online to find out what you can about the companyâs culture as well as its stance on things like dress code, work flex, etc., so you can see if your personality and professional background will match this new work situation. 5. Tie it all together. Employers arenât interested in knowing that you simply want to work for their organization. They want to know how youâre going to solve their problems. Show your interviewer that youâve done your research by understanding the companyâs pain points- and how your experience and expertise can help you fix it. Use specific examples from your work history to show how youâve dealt with similar situations and been able to handle them successfully. Getting a job interview can be exciting, but when itâs last minute, it can also be super stressful. Keep the five key components above in mind when doing last-minute research on a company, and youâll ace your job interview as if you had weeks to prepare! Looking for more advice?
